Online payments, like those made through Payable, are required by Section 326 of the US Patriot Act to verify the identity of individuals involved in the transaction. Under most circumstances, identity verification is successful using legal name and SSN alone. However, additional information is sometimes required, such as photocopies of your identification documents.
In the event that your account requires additional information for identity verification, Payable Support will reach out to you and request that you supply ONE the following:
IMPORTANT: All photo copies must be in color. Black and white copies cannot be processed.
Upon receiving the photo copies, Payable Support will work as quickly as possible to complete your account's identity verification and unblock any pending payments.
If you'd like to know more about why identity verification for electronic payments is required, please read the following excerpt from Section 326 below:
Section 326 of the Act provides that the regulations must contain certain requirements. At a minimum, the regulations must require financial institutions to implement reasonable procedures for (1) verifying the identity of any person seeking to open an account, to the extent reasonable and practicable; (2) maintaining records of the information used to verify the person's identity, including name, address, and other identifying information; and (3) determining whether the person appears on any lists of known or suspected terrorists or terrorist organizations provided to the financial institution by any government agency.
The copies of photo ID that we request fall under the category of "other identifying information" stated in point (2) of the above clause. You can read the entirety of US Patriot Act Section 326 here.
