Ending Access to Payable App & Data

Last Updated:
March 12, 2021

In 2017, Payable was acquired by Stripe. Since then we’ve ended support for Payable over time and rolled out a new service on Stripe Connect to support 1099 reporting and filing. As part of this transition, we will be ending access to Payable on June 15, 2021

After this date, you will no longer be able to log into Payable to access the following data directly:

  • 1099 forms
  • W9 forms
  • Project/worker data

If you are a platform, you can still access copies of this data on behalf of your Connected accounts and contractors by contacting Stripe support at support-payable@stripe.com after June 15, 2021.

If you are a contractor, please contact your platform directly to access copies or request corrections to your tax forms after June 15, 2021.

What does this mean for my business?

As a platform, you are generally obligated to keep and provide 1099 records for your Connected accounts and contractors for up to three years after the filing date.

This means that if you used Payable to file 1099s for:

  • 2017 tax season, you should generally provide assistance up until early 2021
  • 2018 tax season, you should generally provide assistance up until early 2022
  • 2019 tax season, you should generally provide assistance up until early 2023

Please talk with a tax advisor to confirm your exact requirements.

Before June 15th, 2021

As a best practice, we would suggest that you log into Payable before June 15, 2021 to retrieve and store your own copy of your Connected accounts and contractor’s forms. (Since tax forms contain personally identifiable information (PII) such as full name and address please be sure to work with your legal and engineering teams to store this securely.)

Through Payable, you’ll continue to be able to:

  • Export tax forms data to csv
  • Bulk download pdf forms
  • Download W-9 forms
  • File new 1099 forms for 2017, 2018, and 2019 tax seasons manually (UI) and via csv import
  • File corrections for 2017, 2018, and 2019 tax seasons manually (UI) and via csv import
  • Add Owners or Accountants to your team

After June 15th, 2021

You will no longer have access to Payable for this data directly. However you can still access copies and make corrections by contacting Stripe support up until June 30th, 2023 which is after the period time that you are generally obligated to support your connected accounts.

What does this mean for my Connected accounts and contractors?

For Connected accounts and contractors who have already accepted an invite and created an account on Payable:

Before June 15, 2021

They will continue to be able to access and download their forms self-serve by logging into Payable.

They can:

  • Edit their profile information
  • Download 1099 forms

After June 15th, 2021

They will no longer be able to access Payable for this data. Your team will need to assist them with any requests, Stripe will not be able to provide any forms or corrections directly.

If you never invited your Connected accounts or contractors to Payable but still filed a 1099 form for them in the past, you are responsible for assisting them with any requests before and after June 15, 2021.

Stripe will not support sending new account invites. We will also not be able to provide forms to Connected accounts or contractors that request it directly through us.

Where do I go for support?

Please contact support-payable@stripe.com for any questions related to Payable both before and after June 15th—we’re happy to help.
